Kim Parsell found connection and purpose within the global WordPress community. Despite geographical isolation, she became a pivotal figure through her active participation in online forums and events. Her commitment to mentoring and creating a welcoming environment earned her the endearing title “#wpmom.”
Kim’s contributions were substantial: she volunteered countless hours to the WordPress documentation team, receiving acknowledgments in five major releases. Her efforts were recognized during the 2014 “State of the Word” address by Matt Mullenweg, a moment she described as life-changing. Tragically, Kim passed away in early 2015, leaving behind a legacy of community and empowerment.
๐ The Kim Parsell Memorial Scholarship: Continuing Her Legacy
Established in 2015, the Kim Parsell Memorial Scholarship honors Kim’s spirit by supporting women contributors to WordPress. Initially focused on WordCamp US, the scholarship has expanded to include WordCamp Asia and WordCamp Europe, reflecting a commitment to global inclusivity.
๐ Impact and Inspiration
The scholarship has empowered numerous women to participate in WordCamp events, providing opportunities for learning, networking, and contributing to the WordPress ecosystem. Recipients have gone on to make significant impacts within the community, embodying the values Kim championed.

๐ซ Living the Dream: My Kim Parsell Memorial Scholarship Experience ๐
Iโm beyond thrilled to share that I was selected as a recipient of the Kim Parsell Memorial Scholarship โan honor that still feels surreal. At just 23 years old, this opportunity allowed me to travel outside of India for the very first time โ๏ธ๐ฎ๐ณ, to attend WordCamp Asia 2025 in the Philippines ๐ต๐ญ. It was nothing short of a dream come true ๐.
From the moment I arrived, I was surrounded by the vibrant energy of the WordPress community ๐งโ๐ป๐โpeople from all over the world who contribute to something bigger than themselves. I had the chance to meet contributors, leaders, and members of the WordPress Foundation in person ๐ค๐, many of whom I had only known virtually. It was in those moments that I truly realized: my contributions to WordPress matter ๐ชโจ.
This experience deeply reinforced the legacy of Kim Parsellโa woman whose work and spirit continue to empower others like me ๐ฉโ๐ปโค๏ธ. Her story reminded me how vital it is to increase the representation of women in open-source communities ๐ญ๐, especially in WordPress. I now feel even more motivated to continue contributing, mentoring, and helping shape a more inclusive future ๐ฑ๐.
Below are some moments ๐ธ I captured during WordCamp Asia 2025โsnapshots of a life-changing experience that Iโll always treasure ๐ฅน๐.
